David R. Campbell, MA, FRCS, FACS

David Campbell is a vascular surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and the Joslin Diabetes Center, and Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Campbell studied at Stonyhurst College, Clare College Cambridge and Guys Hospital Medical School, and then came to the U.S. to do his residency on the Harvard Surgical Service at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. Midway through his residency he did a year back at Guys during which he obtained his FRCS. After residency he did a vascular fellowship in Houston with Dr. Stanley Crawford where he learned to do thoraco-abdominal aneurysm resections.

He returned to the Deaconnes Hospital and Joslin Diabetes Center where he built a large referral practice. A pioneer in distal bypass surgery, he has performed nearly 4,000 distal bypasses. In recent years he has trained in endovascular surgery and now performs a significant number of his cases using less invasive techniques.

He has co-authored numerous papers and book chapters and given lectures all over the world. He formed a non-profit to work in Vietnam and has helped the physicians there set up a diabetic foot center at Hospital 115 in Ho Chi Minh City and Bach Mail Hospital in Hanol.

When his children were young he was director of Boys Soccer for the town of Brookline and coached the top travel team for many years until his youngest child was 14. He remains an enthusiastic sportsman playing golf, biking and boating. He sings in a men’s Welsh choir in Boston that has sung at the Albert Hall in London a number of times and at Carnegie Hall. He serves on the board of the Yale Alumni Choir and has sung with them in England, South Africa, Cuba, Istanbul, Armenia, Georgia, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Vietnam. In the last few years he has twice been to China as Visiting Professor and looks forward to returning there.

Thanh Dinh, DPM

Dr. Thanh Dinh is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and an Attending Surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Her clinical and academic roles include teaching medical students as well as resident trainees. Additionally, she is responsible for the leadership of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Podiatric Surgical Residency as the Program Director. In this capacity, she creates the educational programming of the trainees, ensuring adequate didactic and surgical knowledge for the care of patients with complex foot and ankle pathology.

Dr. Dinh is a prolific researcher, having published original basic science research and clinical trials on the care of diabetic foot complications in many well-regarded journals such as the Lancet, Diabetes Care and textbooks such as The Diabetic Foot. She is the recipient of several research grants including National Institutes of Health (NIH) and American Diabetes Association (ADA) grants. In addition to original research activities, she has served as a reviewer for manuscripts of several scientific journals and editor for textbooks. As a result of her expertise in the field of Diabetes and Foot surgery, she has served as a speaker at local, national and international educational conferences.

Dr. Dinh has served in leadership roles in her profession including serving on a few committees and serving as the scientific chair of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) Annual Scientific Chair and committee member of the ADA Scientific Sessions. She is a past President of ACFAS leading her profession and its members to be proven leaders and lifelong learners who positively impact the lives of their patients.

 

John M. Giurini, DPM

Dr. Giurini received his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM), San Francisco. He completed residency at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston as well as a fellowship in reconstructive surgery and research. He joined the Deaconess Hospital as full-time member of the Division of Podiatric Surgery in 1987.

He is an Associate Professor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He has served in several leadership positions within the Division including director of residency training and director of fellowship training before being named Chief of the Division of Podiatric Surgery in 1999. He is actively involved in the teaching of fellows, residents and medical students. He is the author of over 70+ peer reviewed articles and book chapters. His research has been published in such prestigious journals as Diabetes Care, Diabetologia and The Lancet as well as the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery. Most recently he wrote the Standards of Foot Care for the ADA which was recently published in Diabetes Care. He is the co-editor of the book Management of the Diabetic Foot, currently in its 5th edition. He has also lectured extensively nationally and internationally including China, Italy, Germany, Japan and Costa Rica.

Dr. Giurini has also served in prominent leadership roles nationally including president of the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons, board member on the Community Leadership Board of the American Diabetes Association (ADA)-Northeast Division and member of the scientific advisory board of the Rongxiang Xu Foundation. He is also co-director of the annual Diabetic Lower Extremity Symposium.

When not caring for complex diabetic wounds and deformities, Dr. Giurini enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 children. He is a former baseball coach in his community having coached to the high school level. He has also served his church and community. He was lead chaperone for a group of 20 high school students to the Romero Center Ministries in Camden, New Jersey, an underserved, underprivileged community. He enjoys traveling, reading and working in his garden

William Hartigan Jr., DPM

Dr. Hartigan has over 20 years of experience in Diabetic Foot Care. He has experience practicing in a broad range of settings including private practice, skilled nursing facilities and Hospital based clinics. He graduated from Kent State College of Podiatric Medicine and completed his residency at Cambridge Hospital where he was Chief Resident. He practiced over 15 years with his father, William Hartigan Sr., DPM.

Dr. Hartigan is the former owner of Hartigan Innovation, a medical device development company. He is experienced in the development and patenting of medical devices.

Dr. Hartigan is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, American Diabetes Association and Association for the Advancement Of Wound Care. Has lectured in both Beijing and Anqing, China.

Richard Jackson, M.D.

Dr. Jackson received his undergraduate degree from MIT, an MD from Ohio State University School of Medicine and completed residency training at Worcester Memorial Hospital. He did his fellowship training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Duke University. He joined the research division at Joslin Diabetes Center in 1982. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is a former Mary K. Iacocca Fellow and recipient of the Cookie Pierce Research Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and started the Hood Center for Prevention of Childhood Diabetes at the Joslin. He was involved with early trials to prevent Type 1 Diabetes and these efforts led to the launch of the Diabetes Prevention Trial – Type 1 (DPT-1).

Dr. Jackson is interested in understanding how to better disseminate information on diabetes control outside of the traditional medical clinic. Together with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative State, Research, Education and Extension Service, Dr. Jackson has set up a series of community-based programs, mostly in under-served rural locations, to provide self-care information, blood pressure screenings and blood tests. He has written a book, Know Your Numbers: Outlive Your Diabetes. His role as Medical Director of Healthcare Services involves developing new relationships between Joslin and a variety of partners outside of Joslin’s Boston location. He is the medical director for Joslin’s alliance with Walgreens. He also directs medical affairs for Joslin’s 25 Affiliates around the country, programs to improve diabetes control in community health centers, as well as forging relationships with both profit and non-profit entities that can extend Joslin’s mission.

Adam Landsman, DPM, PhD

Adam Landsman, DPM, PhD, FACFAS is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Harvard University School of Medicine, and Lead Podiatrist in the Department of Orthopedics at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is Board Certified in Foot Surgery. He holds a PhD in Bioengineering in addition to his Podiatric Medicine Degree. Dr. Landsman has completed over 30 clinical trials, holds 2 patents, and has authored 90+ peer-reviewed studies and numerous book chapters. Previously, he served as the Director of Podiatric Research at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, and at Samuel Merritt University. He has lectured extensively in the United States and internationally and has held faculty appointments at Northwestern University, University of Miami, and Harvard University.
